La Loteria Photoshop Project

The focus of this Photoshop project was to consider a lost loved one and what you remember of them. Incorporate those features into Loteria cards and display them in a way that reflects Dia De Los Muertos. I harvested various pictures from the web to create my backgrounds and stylize my La Loteria cards to reflect characteristics of my grandmother who passed away just two weeks after I graduated from US Coast Guard Boot Camp. She spent her life raising my brother and me since I was five years old. Before that, my mother told me that she made money as a cook while she raised her seven children by herself because all three of her husbands had died from ailments while they were living in the Philippines. I remember sitting with her at her bed side as she grew older and she would faithfully watch The Price is Right and Night Rider. Eventually, the most I could do to remind her that I was by her side as she spent more and more of her life in bed was hold her hand. Soon after, she kept getting pneumonia and slowly died of lung cancer… but she never smoked.

These picture incorporate these things, along with Filipino dishes and reflections of her religious beliefs in Catholicism. I hid a nipa hut behind one set of the playing cards to reflect the kind of home she lived in for most of her life.

Emulating Uelsmann

Emulating Uelsmann

The assignment for this project was to consider the works of Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor and create an image that reflects the style of these artists and incorporates their production methods using Photoshop. Jerry Uelsmann works to combine his images during the development process of film in the dark room. Maggie Taylor scans images onto a computer and develops her work through processing in Photoshop. For this project, I combined scanned images from magazines and photographs from the web to create the finished product that I compiled into Photoshop.

San Diego Latino Film Festival

Poster Image

Poster Image

The objective of the assignment was to create an advertising poster for the following years Film Festival with consideration for representing the Latino culture, San Diego, and incorporating colorful aspects along with a digitized modern theme for what represents the present age of film culture. I combined four of my own photographic images on Photoshop to create the main theme of this poster. All of which were from events and places in San Diego County. The text and colorizing were created by cutting out text shapes from a textured layer that have color adjustments to create a painterly appearance. The image was originally designed to be positioned as a landscape image but I adjusted the size to fit the requirements of the poster submission of 8.5 x 11 inches and filled the black space with the text.
