Screening of ‘Winter in the Blood’

Taking place in northern Montana, around 1973, Winter in the Blood is an adaptation of the novel by James Welch. An exquisitely compiled rendition that captures the audience and torques them through the real life human struggles of a man suffering from great loss and battling his own demons. A relateable depiction of life on the reservation that has yet to have been approached by popular media. The heart ache, sorrow and sobriety are invoking the soul of what it means to be human.

Senior Pictures

My latest client was motivated to have Halo as part of his photography session to remember his senior year. I brought my husband’s poster of Master Chief and realized that the silhouette of the subject in the image was so beautiful that I had to share what I had done to emulate Master Chief in the spirit of the individual. The end result was a nice surprise.

PMDA Portraits of Love returns to The Big Photo Show LA

Portraits of Love to provide free family portraits for members of the active duty military

Las Vegas, Nev. – PMA – The Worldwide Community of Imaging Associations, announces PMDA Portraits of Love will return to The Big Photo Show in Los Angeles May 17-18, 2014. As they did last year at the inaugural Big Photo Show, Portraits of Love – a project developed by the PhotoImaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PMDA) and the USO – will have volunteer professional photographers on site at The Big Photo Show to take free portraits of the families and loved ones of U.S. military members. Through a partnership with Shutterfly, the portraits will be printed and delivered to members of the U.S. military all over the world, all at no cost.

Last year, dozens of families participated in portrait sessions held throughout the two-day event.

“After a tremendous turnout last year, we’re thrilled to be coming back to The Big Photo Show this year with the PMDA Portraits of Love program, and we’re happy to once again offer free portraits to military families,” said Jerry Grossman, Executive Director of the PhotoImaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association. “We’re looking forward to once again being part of this tremendous gathering of imaging companies, dealers and consumers.”

Families and loved ones of active duty members of the military can register to have a portrait done here.

Athletics Photography

Sadly, my college experience is coming to an end. One of my most favorite things to do as a photographer for the Cougar Chronicle and the Communications Department at CSU San Marcos has been photographing sporting events. I finally updated my profile at http://www.behance.net/syreniaimagery to show all of the creative art photographs I took for the team sports. There were so many other photos, but I’ve left them to the campus newspaper and Communications to promote and use. I’m very sad to see it end! I would love to be one of those photographers on the side lines always having the opportunity to take the photographs of sporting events. No matter what arena they’re played in.

Oh, how I will miss it.

Oceanside Beach Cleanup with CSU San Marcos Students

Morning beach cleanup on March 9, 2014 went beautifully. The group of CSUSM students enjoyed doing something to help the environment and protect the local wildlife from pollution. The day was filled with lots of exercise as the students were digging garbage out of the sand as they walked along the coastline looking for debris. The cleanup went from 9 in the morning to 2 that afternoon. What a great way to spend the day.

Text Film Project Fall 2013

I had actually begun this project in November, but never finished it. At the rate I’m going, it might never be finished, but I figure that its worth sharing. The audio isn’t exactly what I was hoping to put together, but in the amount of time any student is given to work on a project, I think I did a pretty darn good job at manipulating sound to make it fit an eeriness that didn’t exist in its original form. The dialogue from ‘Skyfall’ is the Tennyson quote spoken by Judi Dench.
The assignment was to create a film that incorporated text. So I had various people write a short statement to identify themselves and I asked them to hold up the statement while I filmed them to portray who they are or could be perceived to be. In comparison, I asked some Veterans to do the same thing, but portrayed them in a different perspective to symbolize their separation from society: how they’re looked at and treated differently, how their life experiences are far different from that of a civilians and how their understanding and perception of reality is far different from the average person. As a person who comes from a military family, I have found this life of a Veteran to reciprocate within the youth and often becomes repeated as our children grow. There is a great deal of honor that comes with this inherited feeling of obligation to protect our freedoms. Yet, there isn’t anyone willing to completely heed the next generation from considering the lifestyle. So much to express in so little time….
